Sunday - May 20. A day of reckoning. Tomorrow the reconnaisance will begin. We go over the top at 0900 hours. Though hardly a top secret mission, many pretend that it is not happening, trying to boost up confidence among the ranks. With only 14 days to the deadline, this last push is vital for the force. The defining moments are now. With time running out fast, the troops need to give their all, hoping that their sacrifice will be rewarded with freedom and safety for their loved ones. Random items remind the troops of their home. A letter, read and reread a thousand times. A teddy bear, given by a 2 year old son, to protect his father. A jar of Nutella. (Yum...)

The anxiety is shown on every grime lined face. Boots are polished over and over. Weapons are checked and rechecked. It could be the last time that these mundane tasks are ever repeated. Jokes about the next day's mission are met with nervous laughter. The rank smell of the trenches makes eating almost unbearable.

But this is war.

And it is in war that one knows what it feels like. To face death. For glory and honour.

The time they have left. Is 2 weeks. The beginning of the end. Is tomorrow.
